HTML 4.0 Character Entity References

The greatly extended range of entities supported in HTML 4.0 (252, up from 66 in version 3.2), plus the greater number of characters in the WGL4 versions of Microsoft's TrueType fonts for Windows (free download), should make it much easier and more reliable to display a wide range of characters than relying on the HTML 3.2 technique of using the FACE attribute of the FONT tag and the Symbol font.

If your browser does not support HTML 4.0 character entity references, then many of the entities in this list will appear as the wrong characters. As at October 2001, only the Windows versions of Microsoft's Internet Explorer versions 4, 5, 5.5 and 6 and Netscape 6 seem able to show all of the proper characters. Netscape Communicator 4.78 seems to be unable to recognise most of the entities that correspond to decimal numbers above 255, even if View>Character Set is set to Unicode (utf-8)).

Even browsers that are capable of showing the correct characters cannot do so unless you use a font with an extended character set. Fortunately, the range of fonts with Unicode support is increasing steadily, with Microsoft's core fonts (Arial, Courier New and Times New Roman), Arial Unicode MS, Lucida Sans Unicode, Tahoma, Bitstream CyberBit and Code2000 containing hundreds or even thousands of characters.

In the following lists, each character should appear twice. The first occurrence is generated from the numeric character reference and the second from the character entity reference.
